The origins of self-doubt can come from our inner voice or it can come from outside influences such as toxic people that have too much influence in our lives. That negative influence can feed your inner voice, which in turn feeds your fear and self-doubt.

Our inner voices seldom use logic and reason before speaking to us, which is why they are most often the source of self-doubt that can devour our confidence. We are then left feeling fearful, insecure, and that our goals are forever out of reach. This can spread and have us questioning our knowledge and abilities in everything we do.

Thinking positive is almost never effective as it is always up against further waves of self-doubt. It is only through knowledge of self that we can successfully fight back against self-doubt.

Doubt is a part of human nature that we must confront and understand in order to overcome it. The key to self-improvement is taming your self-doubt rather than fighting with it like it was based in reality. That means paying attention to how we react to things, understanding the root of our insecurities, and taking steps to address our fears.

The first step to overcoming self-doubt is to acknowledge that it is there. If you begin to think about the circumstances that are leading you to feel insecure, you will begin to see patterns that show how fear is at the heart of self-doubt.

Toxic people are often another chief source of planting the seed of self-doubt within us. These are people that often project their own self-doubts onto you and are convinced that everything is impossible. Consequently, they are quick to shoot down ideas.

Rather than let these people fuel your self-doubt, surround yourself with supportive and passionate people who can both inspire you and bring out the best in you. You can find them among friends, family, books, or blogs. These are people and words that lift you up when you feel down and help you see the bright side of your darkest fears and doubts. Often, our loved ones can see our lives much more objectively than we can.

The next step is to recall your successes by listing them in written form and include the big and little successes. If you have trouble getting started, this is another area where trusted family and friends can be helpful as they can remind you of the things you’ve done. Once completed, keep the list with you at all times so that you can review it often and help to get yourself back on track mentally and emotionally when you momentarily lose your way.

When you achieve any new successes, try to celebrate them with a little reward such as a healthy and enjoyable activity that you love, but can’t always indulge in. This will enable you to begin living from success to success rather than stunting your life by dwelling on what are perceived to be failures.

Overcoming self-doubt is primarily about giving yourself permission to try over and over again in life. As the old saying goes, ‘The only way to truly fail is to quit trying.’ Although self-doubt never fully disappears from our lives, we can develop these coping mechanisms to deal with it in a better way.
